Although Sony hasn’t made the PS5 Pro formal just yet, it most definitely seems likelier that we’re going to hear an announcement this month, September 2024, and actually hear about a mid-generation upgrade even sooner.

Sony has previous form when it comes to releasing new mid-generation console variants, having done so since the very first PlayStation. As recently as last year, we saw the launch model of the PS5 replaced on retailers’ shelves by the PS5 Slim. More to the point, though, it was in the last generation that the console manufacturer issued a higher-powered version of the

PlayStation 4 in the PS4 Pro: more powerful, and thus capable of affording more powerful-and more enhanced-experiences for nearly all PS4 games.

Supposedly codenamed ‘Project Trinity’ internally, Sony is keeping officially confirmed details very close to its chest and hasn’t said anything publicly about a new PS5 console – but the rumors and well-sourced information are stacking up, with a lot of it pointing toward a beefier console  arriving at the end of 2024. Here’s everything we know about the PS5 Pro.

PS5 PRO: RELEASE DATE SPECULATION

We must preface that neither release date nor price for the PS5 Pro have been confirmed as yet. However, in the most recent reliable leak about PS5 Pro features, there was one pretty strong indication that the device would see its release “on” or at least in time for Christmas 2024.

Taking a look back at the PS4 Pro’s history, it was revealed in September 2016 and released in November 2016, just two months later. We wouldn’t be surprised to hear more specific news soon if Sony continued in that direction.

Price speculation for the PS5 Pro

As for how much the PS5 Pro will cost, our estimates are considerably better-informed because we have absolutely no information to go on. Sony recently increased the price of the PS5, citing a surge in global inflation. You can now expect to pay £479.99, €549.99, or AU$799.95 for a PS5.

Were we to make an educated guess, and factoring in the extra oomph the rumored specs might bring to the table, we would say that the PS5 Pro likely won’t match the PS4 Pro’s starting price when that launched at $599 / £549 / AU$900–1,000.

Industry analyst Jeff Grubb reportedly stated in August 2024 that the PS5 Pro would come at a price of approximately $600, which would corroborate our own suspicions and beliefs.

RUMORED SPECS for PS5 PRO

While this was an area that was harder to predict in the past, the most recent PS5 Pro specs leak and information does at least give us something of moderate substance to point at. It was said to be straight from the internal Developer Network, so it’s couched in some genuine-looking authenticity presenting a list of facts about the new console that informs developers about the particulars of the machine.

One promising line from the source was that “When running on Trinity, PlayStation 5 titles can support higher resolution and frame rate.” Beyond that and in terms of specifics, other specifications and details came up, such as :

  • 45% increase in raw rendering power over the standard PS5
  • Two to four times boost in ray-tracing
  • Sony’s own proprietary upscaling tech – “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution”
  • Support for 8K resolutions
  • “Custom architecture for machine learning”
  • Equipped with a GPU offering an unprecedented 33.5 teraflops of power

PS5 PRO: RECENT ANNOUNCEMENTS AND RUMORS

  • Though it may be expensive, the PS5 Pro is still scheduled for release in late 2024.

Recent reports suggest that the PS5 Pro will still launch this year and could cost up to $600. Jeff Grubb provided information regarding this story. He also said that a State of Play presentation is likely this coming September, although he did not say whether it would include the announcement of the PS5 Pro.

  • The most recent PS5 Pro rumors point to a significant increase in power.

Some gaming technology experts from Digital Foundry said that new documents were revealed about the PS5 Pro console, which its GPU will be as much as 227% faster compared with the base system as measured in teraflops.

  • According to “accurate” leaks, the PS5 Pro might come with a substantial GPU increase.

Tom Warren from The Verge says he has seen development documents, so he believes that Sony is gearing up for a 10% uplift in CPU speed for the PS5 Pro but a much more hefty 45% jump in GPU power.

Should I wait for the PS5 Pro?

The question that probably sits at the back of several minds in the run-up to the inevitable release of such a console is whether to wait for the PS5 Pro or just jump into the world of PlayStation 5. Well, this will bluntly depend on your specific needs, wants, and desires with respect to gaming consoles.

If you’ve waited for the PS5 game library to fill out and you’re just looking for a way to play those existing games, then the ‘base’ or standard PS5 or PS5 Slim will be more than enough. It’s a superb console that offers a whole host of attractive features and ways to get the most out of games, and presents them beautifully. We are also seeing semi-regular price drops now given the console is nearly four years old, so you can probably save money in the process.

This is particularly important, considering that the PS5 Pro will probably be a little expensive. Some recent speculations have placed an upward price of $600, probably even up to $700. Therefore, if you’re on a tight budget, a basic PS5 or PS5 Slim-which have a significantly low retail value of less than $500-will be a great deal.

It would definitely be worth the wait for the PS5 Pro since I’m looking to get a hold of the most powerful console-a true aim of mine-along with the best gaming experience and presentation. Besides, if you do not own a PlayStation 5 right now, then there’s no reason you should wait for several months until upgrading into something even more powerful. The rumors insinuate that the PS5 Pro will be offering a really alluring hike in specifications.
